Overcoming the limitations of osteoarthritis (OA) isn’t about a quick fix; it’s about maintaining your independence and quality of life for the next ten, twenty, or thirty years.

Once we have successfully reduced your pain and restored your mobility, our focus shifts to long-term preservation. We transition you into a sustainable, ongoing care framework designed to safeguard your joint health for life.

What is OA?

Core Treatment Options for Osteoarthritis

These are considered the “mainstays” of treatment and are recommended for almost all patients:

Exercise and Physical Activity

Regular, low-impact exercise (like walking, cycling, or swimming) and land-based strengthening exercises improves the capacity of the muscles around the joint to provide better support and stability.

Weight Management

Losing even a small amount of weight (as little as 5% of body weight) significantly reduces the pressure on weight-bearing joints like the knees and hips.

Patient Education

Learning about the condition and how to manage daily activities effectively is crucial for long-term success.

Hip & Knee Strengthening Programs

We offer the Hip & Knee Longevity Program for an efficient pathway for optimising outcomes before and/or after joint replacement surgery. Endorsed by surgeons and designed by physiotherapists. For people wanting to delay surgery, prepare for surgery or return to function after surgery.

Secondary Options for Treatment

If exercise, weight management and education alone is not enough to manage your symptoms, there are other treatment options used in conjunction for treatment.

Manual Therapy & Supportive Devices

Manual therapy may include, massage, mobilisations and dry needling, while supportive devices refer to taping, braces, walking aids and hot/cold packs. Some of these modalities may be recommended as an adjunctive to your overall management.

Injections

Injections, such as a corticosteroid injection, may be useful in reducing inflammation and reducing pain. This could be a useful first step to reduce pain and allow for effective movement and rehabilitation.

Surgery

Considered as a final resort, when other treatment options have failed to provide any lasting benefit and when pain is severely limiting daily function and quality of life.
